OCT 11 — I really didn’t give much thought over the announcement of the new MACC chief commissioner effective August 1.
Eventhough Datuk Dzulkifli Ahmad was a senior officer from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) with a fairly impressive record, he was replacing Tan Sri Abu Kassim, who had earned something of an “Honest Joe” reputation.
Abu Kassim’s request for early termination of contract didn’t help any.
The AGC, as we know, has a perception index ranging from both ends of the spectrum.
Within August, we learnt of the RM15 million embezzlement case involving Bank Rakyat’s chairman and managing director. The chairman was a retired army general. This was followed by the DBKL bombshell on corruption and money laundering. An executive director was handed 18 charges involving RM2.9 million and RM1.5 million..
A few days ago, we had the biggest haul with the Sabah Water Department director and his deputy involving tens of millions, with cash and valuables in hand. The latest case broke when Dzulkifli was in office for a mere 60 days.
Certainly, we can select talent and train them well. We can even hire the most incorruptible. And pay. But how do we zero in and get that kind of leadership — with brains and courage? Looks like we’ve got one in the MACC chief commissioner. Also looks like he either didn’t allow any political interference or there wasn’t any.
Whichever the case, syabas Dzulkifli. And don’t stop!
